Museumshaus Stralsund
Merchant’s house from the Hanseatic era, around 700 years old, in Stralsund’s old town; a branch of the Stralsund Museum that can be explored from cellar to roof.
Over het museum
The gable-fronted brick house at Mönchstraße 38 is one of the oldest townhouses in Stralsund. Its roof structure was built shortly after 1300; around 1320 the building was completed as the home and shop of a merchant, with a tall hall, a sales cellar, and several storage lofts. Between the 17th and 19th centuries its owners remodeled it several times; the two Utluchten (projecting bay extensions) facing the street were added in the 18th century. In the 20th century up to seven households at times shared the house, which was inhabited until 1979.
After German reunification the dilapidated building was in acute danger of demolition. In 1993 the Deutsche Stiftung Denkmalschutz took over the house, had it carefully restored from 1996 to 1999, and thereby acquired a monument for the first time in order to use it permanently as a museum. On December 15, 1999, it opened as a branch of what was then the Kulturhistorisches Museum, today the Stralsund Museum.
Instead of recreating a supposed original state, the traces of all eras were left visible – right down to soot and dust. Visitors walk through seven levels from the sales cellar up to the top loft, where a Gothic wooden hoist wheel, one of the oldest in Northern Europe, has survived. On view are the Baroque “Hübsche Stube” (fine parlor), a Biedermeier room, a smoke kitchen used until 1979, 20th-century kitchens, uncovered wall paintings and layers of wallpaper, and finds from the restoration. A film documents the condition before restoration.
