Over het museum

Limestone has been quarried and burned in Rüdersdorf for more than 750 years; by the 17th century at the latest, the town was considered Berlin's most important supplier of building materials. Numerous well-known buildings in Berlin and Brandenburg were built from Rüdersdorf stone, and the quarry is still in operation today.

After 1990, monument conservationists, volunteers, and associations campaigned to save the decaying industrial facilities on the northern edge of the quarry. Kilns and rope-pulley pillars were elaborately restored in the 1990s, and the Museumspark was able to open in 1994. Since 2008, a municipal company of the municipality of Rüdersdorf has operated the park, today the Museums- und Kultur GmbH.

On about 17 hectares, the park combines outdoor areas and indoor exhibitions: visitors can see a Germanic kiln, a 17th-century chamber kiln complex, the Rumford kilns from the early 19th century, and the shaft kiln battery built from 1871. Exhibitions are devoted to the geology of the Muschelkalk (shell limestone) in the Otto-Torell-Haus, building materials, cement, laboratory work, and the prison system in the GDR era. The grounds also serve as an event venue and film set.
