Over het museum

The museum is housed in the former goods-handling building of the Wohldorf terminus, built around 1907 for the electric light railway Alt-Rahlstedt–Volksdorf–Wohldorf. The line opened up the Hamburg Walddörfer (forest villages) and ran in its final form as the Walddörfer-Straßenbahn (tram) between Wohldorf and Ohlstedt until operations ended in 1961. The listed shed is the northernmost railway building in Hamburg.

On September 18, 1999, the Nahverkehrsmuseum (local transport museum) opened here, set up by the second Kleinbahn-Verein Wohldorf, founded in 1972. After its merger with the Verein Verkehrsamateure und Museumsbahn (VVM), the VVM has run the museum on a volunteer basis since 2010; the VVM also operates the Eisenbahnmuseum Lokschuppen Aumühle and the Museumsbahnen Schönberger Strand.

Severe water damage forced its closure in 2019. From 2021 the building was comprehensively renovated for around 1.08 million euros; the museum has since reopened.

On display are original parts, documents, models, and photos on the light railway and public transport in Hamburg, including a room on bus and rail transport of the 1950s. The centerpiece is a large model railway layout at a scale of 1:64, which shows the former Wohldorf station with its buildings.
