Over het museum

The foundation was a private collection: in 1966, master mechanical engineer Jürgen Löschner, who worked closely with makers of Ore Mountain folk art in his profession, began collecting nutcrackers. Together with his son Uwe, the present owner, he at first gathered mainly the grim-looking authority figures such as kings, gendarmes, foresters and soldiers; later, pieces from numerous countries were added. Through contacts with collectors and museums in Germany and the USA, the collection grew steadily.

In 1994 the family opened their nutcracker museum in Neuhausen, which sees itself as the first of its kind in Europe. Several pieces were entered in the Guinness Book of Records, including functional giant nutcrackers 3.86 and 5.87 meters tall as well as the collection itself. On August 9, 2008, a 10.10-meter-tall nutcracker was added that towers over the entire complex. Today, about 6,500 nutcrackers from more than 30 countries and four centuries can be seen on over 400 square meters.

In 2000 the building was extended with the Technical Museum "Alte Stuhlfabrik" (old chair factory). The business goes back to 1892, was expanded into a factory in 1908 and – most recently as a production site of the VEB Vereinigte Sitzmöbelindustrie Neuhausen – made chairs until 1991. Recreated workstations show the path from board to ready-to-ship chair; since 2003 the top floor has presented living culture from the Gründerzeit to the 1980s. Since 2019, a restored steam engine has stood in the former boiler room. The world's largest music box, a witch's house, a fairy-tale corner and a collection of over 80 motorcycles from GDR times complement the museum complex.
