Over het museum

The Veste Oberhaus dates back to 1219, when Prince-Bishop Ulrich II – recently invested with the rank of imperial prince – laid the foundation stone for the "Georgsburg" on the Georgsberg above the Danube. For about 600 years, the castle secured the rule of the Passau prince-bishops, including against their own, repeatedly rebellious citizens. In the Renaissance, stately living quarters were added, and from the 17th century the complex was expanded into a fortress. After secularization in 1803 it passed to Bavaria and from 1822 served as a prison and military penal institution.

Passau's museum history begins in 1885 with a collection of the Waldverein (forest association) in the castle's observation tower; in 1905 a city museum was created in the town hall. In 1931 the city of Passau acquired the fortress and moved its museum here in 1932. Today, with about 65,000 square meters of built area, the complex is one of the largest surviving castles in Europe.

The municipal Oberhausmuseum tells, across several exhibition areas, the history of Passau from prehistory to 1803, life in a medieval castle and the religious art of the Middle Ages. There are also departments on guilds and crafts, a historic court pharmacy, Passau porcelain, a fire department museum, the sculpture collection of the sculptor Hans Wimmer and the Böhmerwaldmuseum (Bohemian Forest Museum), which reopened here in 1954. Highlights are St. George's Chapel with its Gothic fresco cycle, the observation tower with a multimedia exhibition and the view from the Batterie Linde of the confluence of the Danube, Inn and Ilz.
