Orgel Art Museum
Musical instrument museum in Windesheim with historic and newly built organs, pianos, and clavichords spanning several centuries.
Over het museum
The museum opened in 2001. The building was commissioned by the district of Bad Kreuznach and designed by the firm Oberlinger-Architekten; the founding director was organ builder Wolfgang Oberlinger. The district ran the museum until 2017; since 2018 it has been operated by a friends’ association, and ownership of the building passed to a private foundation.
More than 30 keyboard instruments are on display across some 900 square meters. Among the oldest are small 18th-century organs, including works by the Stumm and Bürgy organ-building families as well as two Italian instruments. They are joined by replicas of historic small organs such as a regal, a positive organ, and a claviorganum from the Oberlinger workshop, historic fortepianos and square pianos – for example by Érard and Broadwood – and modern instruments, right up to a grand piano designed by Luigi Colani.
The instruments are played during guided tours, and for a fee visitors can even play the concert organ themselves; regular concerts and changing exhibitions on art, architecture, and photography round out the program. In 2019, the €50 gold coin featuring a fortepiano was officially presented at the museum.
