Paul-Wunderlich-Haus
District administration building on Eberswalde's market square whose foyers on three floors show works by the Eberswalde painter and graphic artist Paul Wunderlich, freely accessible.
Over het museum
The Paul-Wunderlich-Haus was built between 2005 and 2007 on the market square of Eberswalde as the new administration and service center of the Barnim district. Designed by GAP Gesellschaft für Architektur & Projektmanagement, the complex houses the district council, large parts of the district administration, as well as shops and restaurants. It was opened on July 1, 2007, by Chancellor Angela Merkel. Because the building draws much of its heating and cooling from geothermal energy via its foundation piles, it was recognized in 2008 as one of the most energy-efficient office buildings in Germany.
It is named after the painter, graphic artist, and sculptor Paul Wunderlich, born in Eberswalde in 1927, who studied and taught in Hamburg after the war and became internationally known for his lithographs. In 2008 his hometown made him an honorary citizen; he died in Provence in 2010.
The foundation of the collection was laid in November 2005 by a collector couple with over 330 works, which went into the Paul Wunderlich Foundation run by the district. Through further donations from the artist's family and private collectors, the holdings now comprise more than 750 works. The publicly accessible foyers show paintings, prints, sculptures, and objects, supplemented by loans and annually changing themed shows on individual phases of his work and on the artist's companions.
