Prientalmuseum im Schloss Hohenaschau
Museum in Hohenaschau Castle on the iron industry in the Priental valley and the Cramer-Klett family – open during the castle tours from May to October.
Over het museum
The building of the Prientalmuseum was originally the benefice priest's and sexton's house of Hohenaschau Castle. It was probably built during the Baroque conversion of the castle around 1680 and adjoins directly the castle chapel of 1637 to 1639, which Johann Christoph I of Preysing-Hohenaschau had founded together with a chaplaincy. Until 1975 the castle chaplains lived here, and later the sextons.
The castle itself goes back to the late 12th century, when the Lords of Hirnsberg built it at the entrance to the upper Priental. Later owners expanded it in the Renaissance and Baroque into the administrative seat of their domain; in the early 20th century Theodor von Cramer-Klett altered the complex again. Today the castle belongs to the federal government and serves mainly as a vacation home, but is accessible as part of guided tours.
After a renovation by the federal property administration, the Prientalmuseum moved into the former sexton's house in June 1988. On the first floor, the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Aschau (local history association) shows the roughly 300-year history of iron processing in the Priental from the mid-16th to the end of the 19th century. The second floor has been devoted since 2009 to the industrialist family Cramer-Klett, originally from Nuremberg, and its role in the Priental; a separate room presents Baron Ludwig Benedikt von Cramer-Klett with the themes of hunting, writing, and the traditional costume movement. The museum includes the general store "Burgladerl," in the style of around 1900.
