Römervilla am Tegelberg
Covered remains of a Roman estate with a bathhouse, underfloor heating, and fresco copies at the Tegelbergbahn valley station in Schwangau.
Over het museum
The first traces of the Roman estate came to light in 1934 during pipe work at the foot of the Tegelberg. When the Tegelbergbahn was built in the 1960s, walls were found again; between 1966 and 1968, three buildings were then excavated: a residential building, a bathhouse, and an outbuilding.
Based on coin finds, the complex was built around the middle of the 2nd century AD under Emperor Antoninus Pius. The bathhouse served the estate owner's family and followed the typical Roman sequence of changing room, lukewarm and warm baths, and a cold bath with a pool; floors and walls were heated by a hypocaust. In the workshop building, three drying kilns were found, which point to the processing of flax. The settlement was abandoned in later Roman times, probably in connection with Germanic invasions or a mudslide.
The wall and ceiling paintings of the bath, with gods, mythological scenes, and dolphins, are of particular importance. Their fragments survived under masses of debris and were elaborately restored; the originals are kept by the Archäologische Staatssammlung in Munich, while copies can be seen on site. The bathhouse received a protective building in 1996. Today the wall remains are freely accessible with information panels and are located on the Via Claudia Augusta, an ancient Roman road.
