Over het museum

The museum opened in 1928 as the district museum of the Neuwied district. The listed building on Raiffeisenplatz was built from 1926 to designs by the Cologne architects Mattar and Scheler in the Heimatstil (regional revival style) with Neoclassical and Baroque touches; the four floors offer around 800 square meters of exhibition space, and the museum also has a garden. In 2007 the building was given the name Roentgen-Museum.

Its namesakes are Abraham Roentgen (1711–1793) and his son David (1743–1807), who made luxury furniture in Neuwied for royal courts from Paris to St. Petersburg. Abraham Roentgen belonged to the Moravian Church (Herrnhuter Brüdergemeine), which was able to settle in the young residence town thanks to the religious tolerance of the Counts of Wied. The museum holds a collection of these "Neuwied furniture" pieces that is unique in the world – secretaries, metamorphic tables, chests of drawers, and caskets with inlay work, gilded bronzes, and ingenious mechanisms – as well as clocks by the Neuwied clockmaker Peter Kinzing. The showpiece is the Apollo clock, a musical clock that Roentgen and Kinzing made for the tsar's court.

Further rooms show furniture from the Baroque to Art Nouveau, portraits of the counts and princes of Wied, and views of the Baroque town foundation. A multimedia section is devoted to Friedrich Wilhelm Raiffeisen, who developed the cooperative idea as mayor of Heddesdorf; furnished Westerwald parlors show the everyday life of the simple rural population of his time.

On the second floor, temporary exhibitions on art and design take place several times a year. Concerts, lectures, and readings complete the program; in 2026 the museum was named "Museum of the Month" by the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
