Local history museum on the city and regional history in the Old Town Hall of Schwerte; currently closed because of the building's conversion.
Over het museum
The Ruhrtalmuseum was founded in 1933 with the support of the Schwerter Heimatverein (local heritage society), established two years earlier. It was housed in the Old Town Hall, a building from the mid-16th century that had also served, among other things, as the residence of the town's night watchman. Its first director, until 1977, was the self-taught Josef Spiegel; under his successors, the museum received a new exhibition concept with state funds.
In 1996 a friends' association was formed, whose donations were used to glaze the open arcade hall and convert it into a reception area. The focal points of the collection include the Ice Ages, the history of Schwerte and its districts, and finds and testimonies from the Middle Ages and modern times.
Until 2018 the museum shared the Old Town Hall with the city archive. Since then, the building and the neighboring Marktschänke have been renovated by the Bürgerstiftung Schwerter Mitte (citizens' foundation) and converted into a new ensemble at St. Viktor Church; the foundation is now also the museum's sponsor. After the work is completed, the Ruhrtalmuseum is to return to the Old Town Hall.
