Saarländisches Bergbaumuseum
Museum of coal mining in the Saar region, housed in Bexbach’s Hindenburgturm tower, with a reconstructed underground mine and large machinery in the Blumengarten park.
Over het museum
The museum was set up in 1934 inside the Hindenburgturm, an observation tower in Bexbach’s Blumengarten (flower garden), and has been expanded continually ever since. The underground exhibition area was enlarged considerably, above all in 1957 and 1986. Today the museum is run by the association Verein Saarländisches Bergbaumuseum Bexbach e.V.
The exhibition in the tower spans several floors and covers coal mining in the Saar region from its beginnings in the 15th century to the 1980s. Topics include the alternating German and French administration of the Saar mines, underground safety and technology, coke production, transportation, and the everyday life of mining families, illustrated for example by a model of a miner’s house from the late 19th century. More recent developments, whose huge machines would not fit in the building, are presented on film.
Visitors pass through the miners’ changing room and the lamp room into the underground section, which shows different types of roof support, from timber props and steel props to hydraulic shields. During guided tours, compressed-air equipment such as rock drills is put into operation, and some of it can even be tried out by visitors. Locomotives and other large exhibits stand in the surrounding Blumengarten, and the panorama level offers sweeping views over the landscape around the Höcherberg.
