Schleifmühle Schwerin

Historic water mill at the Schwerin Palace Garden where granite was once ground – today a museum with a working demonstration facility.

Over het museum

In 1704, a gunpowder mill was first built on the Faule See at the edge of the Schwerin Palace Garden. Over the following decades its use changed several times – from a tannery mill and a pearl barley mill to a first stone-grinding workshop around 1747. From 1755, Duke Christian Ludwig II had the complex expanded into a stone-grinding mill, in which heavy granite boulders were processed into slabs, sarcophagi, monument bases, and fireplace surrounds until the 19th century.

Under court architect Georg Adolph Demmler, the mill supplied workpieces for the reconstruction of Schwerin Palace in the 1840s and 1850s. From 1862 the building served as a wool spinning mill, which ceased operation in 1904; afterward it was used as a warehouse, residence, and transformer station.

Between 1983 and 1985, the mill was reconstructed and made accessible as a technical demonstration facility, driven as before by an undershot water wheel. In 1996 an association took over the sponsorship from the city, in 2000 the mill received a new water wheel, and further renovations followed from 2011 to 2018. Since March 2017, a new permanent exhibition explains water power, mill technology, and the daily life of the grinding millers and day laborers. The ensemble also includes the grinding miller's residence from 1783, a day laborers' house from 1813, the so-called materials house from the 1820s, and a bridge over the mill stream renewed in 2016.
