Over het museum

Burg Wolkenstein was built toward the end of the 12th century on a gneiss rock above the Zschopau valley as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Waldenburg, first recorded as owners in 1241. After the Waldenburg line died out, the lordship passed to the Wettins in the late 15th century. Around 1500, Duke George and, from 1505, Duke Henry the Pious had the residential tower remodeled and the south wing built; the timber-beam ceilings and murals in the banquet hall and the Princes' Parlor date from this time.

As the seat of the Electoral Saxon district office (Amt) of Wolkenstein, which at times administered seven towns and 40 villages, the palace was an administrative center for centuries; later it housed a court and, until 1951, a prison. The torture chamber and the "Angstloch" (dungeon hole), already listed in the palace inventory of 1612, date from the period of high criminal jurisdiction.

In 1963 a local history museum moved in; it was expanded after 1990 and is now run by the town as Museum Schloss Wolkenstein. It presents the history of the town and palace with a town model from the 1950s, folk art and guild artifacts. The exhibition "Land der Amethyste" has existed since 1995; following a major donation it is being expanded step by step, and the new AmethystGewölbe (Amethyst Vault) opened in October 2025. Back in December 2024, the Tower Hall became the first room of the redesigned permanent exhibition to open.
