Over het museum

The Funkerberg in Königs Wusterhausen is regarded as the cradle of radio broadcasting in Germany. As early as 1911, an airship and telegraph battalion tested radio technology here; after the First World War, the Reichspost took over the station. On December 22, 1920, a Christmas concert went out over the airwaves from Transmitter House 1 – the first radio broadcast in Germany, which was honored in 2016 as an IEEE Milestone in the history of technology. In the following years the transmitter complex grew considerably; the central tower built in 1925 was for a time the tallest free-standing structure in Germany.

The facilities largely survived the Second World War but were then mostly dismantled as reparations. From 1945, shortwave and longwave broadcasts resumed from the Funkerberg, and in 1949 the medium-wave transmitter 21, relocated from Berlin-Tegel, began operating here; it ran until 1989 and still stands in House 2 today. Regular broadcasting ended in the summer of 1995.

After reunification, the friends' association "Sender Königs Wusterhausen" campaigned to preserve the technology; in 1992 the transmitter and radio technology museum was established in Transmitter House 1. Since 2007 the site has belonged to the town of Königs Wusterhausen, which operates the museum through EBEG mbH together with the friends' association.

After more than three years of renovation, the museum reopened on June 20, 2026, with an accessible entrance, an elevator, and a newly designed permanent exhibition. On display are transmitter technology from the years of operation, a radio wall with historic receivers, and a working 1,000-horsepower Deutz diesel engine.
