Artworks about people's relationship with rivers such as the Nidda, the Rhine and the Atrato in Colombia, which are understood here as living beings with rights of their own.
The building at the corner of Löwengasse and Dorotheenstraße was built at the beginning of the 18th century as a residence right next to Bad Homburg Palace; later the Hesse-Homburg government councilor Elias Neuhof lived here. At the end of the 1970s the house was threatened with demolition. At the suggestion of entrepreneur Herbert Quandt, Altana AG acquired the property, had it restored and named it after Isaac von Sinclair, the Bad Homburg-born diplomat and writer who was a friend of Friedrich Hölderlin.
Since 1982 the Sinclair-Haus has served as an exhibition venue. It has no permanent exhibition of its own; instead it shows changing exhibitions of 20th- and 21st-century art whose common thread is the relationship of humans to nature – for example to clouds, ice, sand, forests, fungi or plants. The shows combine art with science, music and literature and are accompanied by lectures, concerts and readings.
In 2017 the museum passed to the Stiftung Nantesbuch, founded by Susanne Klatten, which has operated as the Stiftung Kunst und Natur since 2021 and, in addition to Bad Homburg, runs a site in Nantesbuch in Upper Bavaria. Art education carries great weight here: an idea booklet called "Blattwerke" is produced for each exhibition, mornings are reserved for school and university groups, and there has been a permanent educational partnership with a neighboring elementary school since 2007. The museum also looks after a knowledge garden in the adjacent palace park.
