Over het museum

The sculpture garden was founded in 1994 by the sculptor couple Monika and Klaus Müller-Klug in the garden of a former parsonage in Damnatz, directly behind the Elbe dike in the Lower Saxon Elbe Valley Biosphere Reserve. They were supported by the Stiftung für Bildhauerei Berlin and the collector Bernd Heiner Berge, who also contribute works on loan.

On the grounds of more than one hectare, there are now sculptures of stone, wood, bronze, and steel. Many works were created specifically for this place, others were embedded in the garden landscape through planting and terrain shaping; sight lines lead from work to work. In addition to the founders, artists represented include Gerson Fehrenbach, Otto Almstadt, Hartmut Stielow, Janez Lenassi, Georg Seibert, and Franziska Seifert.

In 2010, the "Kleines Museum für zeitgenössische Kunst" (Small Museum of Contemporary Art) was added in a converted barn. It shows a collection of sculpture, painting, photography, and installation, for example by Johannes Grützke, Uwe Bremer, and Michael Schmidt, and also serves as a space for concerts and readings.

In 2018, parts of the grounds went as an additional endowment to the Franziska & Tim Cordts Foundation, which secures the garden's continued existence and regularly hosts concerts. In 2025, a live-in studio for fellows from various art disciplines was created in the gable of the museum.
