Max Emanuel von Bayern

Presentation on Elector Max II Emanuel, who was depicted on medals entirely in keeping with the absolutist ideal of the ruler.

Over het museum

The collection has its roots in the Kunstkammer (cabinet of curiosities) of Duke Albrecht V, who systematically acquired ancient coins in the mid-16th century; by around 1600 the holdings already numbered several thousand pieces. Looting during the Thirty Years' War left gaps, but purchases and treasure finds allowed the electoral collection to grow again. The merger of the Munich and Palatinate holdings in 1777 and items from secularized monasteries after 1803 brought further major additions.

In 1807 the coin cabinet was separated from the court and placed under the Bavarian Academy of Sciences; King Ludwig I supported it with regular acquisitions. In World War II the Academy building that housed the collection was destroyed. Since 1963 it has been presented as a public museum in the Residenz, accessible via the Löwenportal (Lion Portal) and the Kapellenhof courtyard.

With around 300,000 objects – coins, medals, paper money, pre-coinage forms of payment, and engraved gems from antiquity to the present – it ranks among the most important institutions of its kind internationally. The permanent exhibition in four halls is complemented by changing special exhibitions. The coin collection is also a research institute with its own publications and a specialist library of more than 35,000 titles that is open to the public.
