Staatsgalerie in der Burg Burghausen
Branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections in the Palas of Burghausen Castle, with late Gothic altar panels and monumental paintings by Hans Werl.
Over het museum
Burghausen Castle stretches for more than a kilometer along a narrow ridge above the Salzach River. After the division of the territory in 1255, Duke Henry XIII of Lower Bavaria expanded the complex as a secondary residence; in the 15th century, the Rich Dukes of Bavaria-Landshut, above all George the Rich, turned it into the most powerful fortress in their territory with five outer courtyards and strong fortifications. At times the duchess lived in the main castle with her court.
After the army had left the castle, the main castle was restored from 1896 and a state picture gallery was set up in the Palas. Today the Staatsgalerie, a branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, together with the recreated ducal living quarters forms the Staatliches Burgmuseum (State Castle Museum) of the Bavarian Palace Administration.
On two floors, 56 paintings are on display. On the third floor hang mainly late medieval altar panels from Upper Bavarian monasteries such as Tegernsee, Attel, Rottenbuch and Raitenhaslach, including panels by Gabriel Mälesskircher; the oldest picture dates from around 1425. On the fourth floor, the history paintings, about ten meters wide, by the Munich court painter Hans Werl make an impression; created around 1601/05 for the Munich Residenz, they show events from Bavarian history. From the fourth floor, 62 steps lead up to a viewing platform on the roof of the Palas.
