Staatsgalerie Neuburg
Gallery of Flemish Baroque painting of the Bavarian State Painting Collections in the Residenzschloss Neuburg an der Donau, with altarpieces by Rubens.
Over het museum
The Residenzschloss (residential palace) in Neuburg an der Donau was the seat of the Principality of Pfalz-Neuburg, founded in 1505. From 1530, Count Palatine Ottheinrich had three Renaissance wings built around an arcaded courtyard; the sgraffito pictures on the courtyard facade and the palace chapel, painted in 1543 and one of the earliest Protestant church interiors, are among the special features. In the 17th century, Count Palatine Philipp Wilhelm added the Baroque east wing with its round towers.
After extensive renovation, the Staatsgalerie moved into the west wing, the so-called Ottheinrichbau, in April 2005. The branch gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections is devoted exclusively to Flemish Baroque painting. Many pictures go back to the passion for collecting of two Wittelsbach electors: Max Emanuel of Bavaria and Johann Wilhelm of Pfalz-Neuburg.
At the center are two side-altar paintings by Peter Paul Rubens, which Count Palatine Wolfgang Wilhelm commissioned in 1619 for the Neuburg court church – the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Outpouring of the Holy Spirit. The associated central panel, the Great Last Judgment, is now in the Alte Pinakothek. In addition, the gallery shows more than 120 paintings by Anthonis van Dyck, Jacob Jordaens, Jan Brueghel the Elder, Frans Snyders, David Teniers the Younger and other painters.
The gallery is part of the tour of Schloss Neuburg, which in the east wing houses a museum on the history and art of the Principality of Pfalz-Neuburg with portraits, tapestries, weapons and precious vestments from the Ursuline convent.
