Stadt- und Regionalmuseum Perleberg

One of the oldest regional museums in Brandenburg: finds from the Seddin royal tomb, Perleberg city history and rural life in the Prignitz.

Over het museum

A loss prompted the founding of the museum: in 1899 the finds from the Bronze Age royal tomb of Seddin went to Berlin, to the Märkisches Museum. So that further archaeological finds and antiquities from Perleberg and the western Prignitz would stay in the region, a museum of its own was established in 1905. The initiator and first director was the merchant Wilhelm Ratig.

Since 1931 the museum has been located in a house built around 1800 at Mönchort 7; later the neighboring buildings 9 to 11 were added. The collection survived the Second World War without major losses and, with around 35,000 objects, is among the most extensive regional holdings in Brandenburg. Into the 1990s the museum also carried out archaeological excavations itself.

Between 2010 and 2012 the exhibition rooms were redesigned. In October 2012 the permanent archaeological exhibition opened on the first floor, followed in December 2020 by the new section on rural life on the third floor. In between, the second floor tells the history of the Hanseatic city with a city model, guild objects, medieval church art and two historic rooms.

Today the museum, together with the city archive, belongs to the Perleberg city administration. Besides archaeology and city history, the collection focuses on furniture, textiles and everyday implements, paintings and prints, and the photographic estate of the Perleberg photographer Max Zeisig.
