Over het museum

The Stadtgalerie Kiel was founded in 1988 by the state capital Kiel. It is centrally located in the city center in the Neues Rathaus complex on Andreas-Gayk-Straße, which it shares with the city library, and has about 1,200 square meters of exhibition space.

The program focuses on contemporary art: international positions from the Baltic Sea region as well as national and regional art, combined with a firm emphasis on supporting artists from Kiel. Every two years the gallery presents the winner of the Gottfried-Brockmann-Preis for young Kiel art with an exhibition and catalog.

The municipal collection ranges from the Kiel postwar Expressionists to 21st-century art; in 2022 a donation of around 120 graphic works was added. Also under the gallery's roof are the Heinrich-Ehmsen-Stiftung, founded in 1986, whose holdings on the work of the Kiel painter are shown in changing exhibitions in rooms of their own, and the Stadtbilderei, which in 1980 began lending out artworks as the first art lending library in Schleswig-Holstein.

Since 2002 the producers' gallery Prima Kunst, run by students of the Muthesius Kunsthochschule, has also been docked to the foyer in a shipping container. In autumn 2026, after 25 years of continuous operation, the building will receive new exhibition lighting.
