Over het museum

The museum's beginnings go back to 1863: at that time Wismar citizens founded an association and set up a museum of art and antiquities. In the following decades the collection changed premises several times – including to the Hauptwache (main guardhouse) on the Markt and the Alte Schule (old school) near St. Marien. In 1925 the city took over the association's museum, and in 1933 it moved into the Schabbellhaus as a local history museum, where it reopened after the Second World War in December 1950.

The main building at Schweinsbrücke 8 was built from 1569 to 1571 as a residence and brewery for the brewer, merchant and later mayor Heinrich (Hinrich) Schabbell, to designs by the Utrecht master builder Philipp Brandin. With its stepped gable and Renaissance portals, it is among the most magnificent brick buildings in the Dutch Renaissance style on the Baltic Sea. Next door, at number 6, stands a medieval hall house with a Kemladen (storage chamber). The ensemble was extensively renovated until 1997 and again from 2010 to 2017; the museum remained closed during that time.

In December 2017 the SCHABBELL reopened. The tour through both buildings tells, with more than 2,000 objects, the story from the founding of the city in the early 13th century through the Hanseatic period and the Swedish period to the Peaceful Revolution of 1989/90. Highlights include Schabbell's painted living rooms, a 16th-century Flemish tapestry and the only original surviving Wismar Swedish Head (Schwedenkopf). In the "Gläsernes Museum" (Glass Museum), a show lab and show storage give a look behind the scenes of restoration and collection care.
