Hafengeschichten. Was bewegt Ludwigshafen?

Online exhibition on the history of Ludwigshafen's ports and their importance for the city's development, published on the regional cultural heritage portal kreuz-rad-loewe.de.

Over het museum

Ludwigshafen am Rhein's municipal museum was founded in 1904 and is devoted to the history of a comparatively young city: from the 17th-century bridgehead and fortifications, through the 19th-century port and trading town, to the chemical-industry hub whose rise is closely tied to the founding of BASF in 1865.

From 1984 to 2021, the museum showed its permanent exhibition on the second floor of the Rathaus-Center in the city center. Topics included the incorporated districts, work and industry, the world wars and reconstruction, sports, art, immigration and religious diversity, and the development of transport and the cityscape. A highlight was a large wooden model showing Ludwigshafen around 1909. Regular special exhibitions on city and regional history complemented the displays.

Because the Rathaus-Center is being abandoned and demolished, the museum had to close in 2021; the entire collection has been in storage ever since. In the future, the museum and the city archive are to form the "Haus der Stadtgeschichte" (House of City History), which is being created in a converted former warehouse, the Rhenushalle at Luitpoldhafen in the Süd district. The museum is to occupy the upper floor there. The move has been delayed several times, partly due to rising construction costs; the city now expects the museum to reopen in 2029.

Until then, the Stadtmuseum runs its branch sites, the Karl-Otto-Braun-Museum in Oppau and the Schillerhaus in Oggersheim, shows individual exhibitions at other venues, and presents topics online.
