Over het museum

The Stadtmuseum was founded in 1994, commissioned by the city of Nordhorn, by the Museumsverein für die Grafschaft Bentheim; today it is run by the Grafschafter Museumsverein. At first it had only archive and exhibition rooms but hardly any objects. That changed quickly: after the bankruptcy of the textile group NINO in 1994 and the end of production at Rawe in 2001, the museum secured large quantities of material from offices, factory halls, and company archives; companies, associations, and many citizens contributed further pieces.

The exhibitions are spread across three former textile buildings. In October 1996 the first permanent exhibition opened in the Povelturm, the dust and water tower of the Povel spinning mill built in 1906, which today tells the city's history and houses a café on its upper floors. In 1999 the Museumsfabrik followed in the Old Weaving Mill Povel of 1950, where volunteer textile workers demonstrate historic machines. In April 2011 the permanent exhibition "Menschen, Mode und Maschinen" (People, Fashion, and Machines) was added in the listed NINO-Hochbau, a spinning mill building renovated in 2009, in which the museum uses about 1,200 square meters.

The core of the collection is more than 100,000 industrial and fashion photographs, many from NINO's advertising, plus clothing made from Nordhorn fabrics, hundreds of pattern books, promotional items, and fashion magazines. Parts of the photo holdings have been digitized. Since 2019 the museum has held the museum quality seal of the Museumsverband für Niedersachsen und Bremen, which was renewed in 2026.
