Stadtmuseum Werdohl
City museum at Werdohl station on transport routes, the wire and aluminum industries, and the transformation from a church village in the Lenne valley into a town.
Over het museum
The Stadtmuseum is supported by the Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Werdohl (local history society), founded in 1983, which runs it together with the town. It opened on April 30, 1989, in a building on Goethestraße; in 2003 and 2004 its concept and displays were thoroughly reworked.
In October 2013, the museum moved into an annex of the former Werdohl station building on Bahnhofsplatz. The previous building on Goethestraße was demolished in 2015. The exhibition is looked after by volunteer members of the society, who also offer guided tours.
The permanent exhibition shows how a remote church village in the Lenne valley with barely a thousand inhabitants became, through industrialization, a town that received its town charter in 1936. One section follows the transport routes – from the Lenne ford and the connection to the Ruhr-Sieg railway in 1861 to the narrow-gauge Kreis Altenaer Eisenbahn. Another is devoted to metalworking: from the medieval bloomery furnace and the Osemund hammer mills, through the rolling mill in Elverlingsen, which was converted into Germany's first wire rolling mill in 1817, to early aluminum processing, plus a side section on the Werdohl patrons of airship construction, Carl Berg and Alfred Colsman.
Other rooms deal with the development of the church, administration, and schools, working and living conditions since 1860, and domestic life in Werdohl.
