Over het museum

Haus Rykenberg in Werl's old town near the Propsteikirche is a Burgmannshaus (house of a castle retainer) that Arnold von dem Rykenberge had built around 1360; his family served as castle retainers to the electors of Cologne. Later it was mostly inhabited by hereditary salt-making families, from 1715 by the von Lilien family, until the city of Werl bought the building in 1914. The building combines a massive sandstone section and a Kemenate (heated chamber) with more recent half-timbered parts and is a listed monument.

The first museum rooms were opened in September 1962, and further rooms were added gradually. The house is named after the longtime museum director and local historian Wendelin Leidinger. Today the Neuer Heimat- und Geschichtsverein Werl looks after the municipal museum on a volunteer basis.

The collection spans archaeological finds, around 2,000 years of salt production and the hereditary salt-maker system, the Marian pilgrimage, and industrialization, for example through the Wulf yeast factory. A city model shows Werl in the 17th century; further rooms are devoted to the Nazi era, Jewish life, and witch persecution. Dedicated galleries show paintings by Heinrich Gaudenz von Rustige, who was born in Werl, as well as drawings and graphic works by Hans Sponnier. The house includes a museum garden with a replica of a salt-boiling furnace.
