Straßenbahnmuseum Halle
Association-run museum in the listed streetcar depot of 1898 with around 40 historic streetcars, buses, and utility vehicles from Halle and the surrounding area.
Over het museum
The foundation was laid by streetcar enthusiasts who in 1974 saved an old motor car from being scrapped and three years later founded a working group for historic streetcars within the Deutscher Modelleisenbahn-Verband der DDR (GDR model railway association). This led to the association Hallesche Straßenbahnfreunde, which today, with around 70 volunteers, restores vehicles, runs the museum, and documents the history of public transport in the area of Halle, Merseburg, and Bad Dürrenberg.
The museum is located in the former depot on Seebener Straße in the Giebichenstein district. The car hall made of yellow and red bricks was built in 1898 with initially six tracks and was later expanded; until 1968 it was a regular depot and afterward served as a storage site for retired cars. Since 1996 visitors have been able to tour the listed depot as a museum.
The collection comprises about 40 streetcars and rail vehicles, including motor cars from more than a hundred years of Halle streetcar history, trailers, buses of GDR production, and utility vehicles; some cars come from other cities in the region. Several vehicles are in running order and are used on city tours and special trips. Since 2006 the museum has also included a model streetcar layout of the Merseburger Überlandbahn (Merseburg interurban railway).
