The exhibition in the Alter Pfarrhof (old parsonage farm) explores Thuringia as a land of toys, from home-based work to factory production, with pieces from the museum's collection.
The Thüringer Freilichtmuseum Hohenfelden was founded in 1979; its first director was the settlement researcher Hartmut Wenzel. The aim was to preserve Thuringia's rural building and living culture before the old farmhouses, craft workshops, and outbuildings disappeared from the villages.
The museum consists of two sites. In the listed village of Hohenfelden, several buildings have been preserved in their original locations and restored, including the parsonage farm with the former parsonage, the one-room school, a day laborer's house, and one of the last village brewhouses in Thuringia. On the museum grounds at the Eichenberg, a few hundred meters north of the village, buildings from various parts of the state are instead dismantled and faithfully re-erected – such as the farmstead of well-to-do farmers, a village smithy, a post windmill, an Umgebindehaus (a half-timbered house with a distinctive timber support frame), a pottery, and a shepherd's house.
The buildings range from the 16th century to the 1960s. Cottage gardens, fields, and old livestock breeds show the houses in their natural setting, while furniture and tools convey the everyday life of their inhabitants. The Eichenberg grounds are continually being expanded with additional houses.
The museum is run by the Weimarer Land district, supported by a friends' association. Besides special exhibitions, the annual program features festivals such as the Handwerkertag (Craftsmen's Day), the Thüringer Schäfertag (Thuringian Shepherds' Day), a cheese market, and an autumn market, as well as craft demonstrations and hands-on activities for children.
