Till-Eulenspiegel-Museum Schöppenstedt

Museum on the trickster Till Eulenspiegel: books, pictures, films and art show how the figure has changed over 500 years.

OpeningstijdenToegang vanaf € 4,50 Rolstoeltoegankelijk Café

Over het museum

The museum is based on the Eulenspiegel collection of Erich Leimkugel, an Essen pharmacist originally from Schöppenstedt, who made it publicly accessible in the late 1930s and donated it to his hometown in 1947 shortly before his death. In 1950, the Freundeskreis Till Eulenspiegels (circle of friends) was founded, which expanded the collection through many purchases, ran the museum for a long time and later supported it as a friends' association. Today the Samtgemeinde Elm-Asse (joint municipality) is the sponsor.

Since 1961, the museum has been located on Nordstraße. Even the first permanent exhibition, with scholarly ambition, addressed the question of how the figure was received and reinterpreted over the centuries. The collection and archive with around 3,000 volumes of primary and secondary literature became a point of contact for researchers from Germany and abroad; the Eulenspiegel-Jahrbuch (yearbook) has also been published since 1960.

In 1996, an extension was added whose shape resembles a jester's cap. It enlarged the space to around 600 square meters and offers room for special exhibitions, theater, lectures, conferences and concerts.

Since 2017, a newly designed, inclusive permanent exhibition has shown the many faces of the jester without committing to a single interpretation: from the coarse trickster of the chapbook to the children's book hero to a political projection screen. Among the most precious items is an edition of the Eulenspiegel book printed in Frankfurt am Main in 1555.
