Töpfermuseum Thurnau
Specialist museum on Thurnau's pottery tradition of over 400 years in the former Latin school, with a smoke kitchen from the 16th century.
Over het museum
Potters have been documented in Thurnau since 1579. For a long time they mainly made single-color glazed everyday tableware for kitchen, stable and field; from the mid-19th century, decorations applied with a slip trailer (Malhorn) were added. After a decline around 1900, the painter and ceramicist Günther Stüdemann revived the craft from the 1940s by introducing faience painting and training numerous apprentices.
Planning for a museum began in the 1970s. In 1978, the market town made the building of the former Latin school on Kirchplatz available, a 16th-century building with a Renaissance gable. The driving force was Luise Stüdemann, from whose and her husband's estate a large part of the collection comes. In 1982, the pottery museum opened as an institution of the market town of Thurnau.
Over the following decades the building was expanded several times, most recently in 2014 with a didactically revised exhibition, a storage area and a museum education area. The collection comprises ceramics from 19 Thurnau workshops, some of which still exist today, and documents all the steps from clay extraction to firing. During renovation work, a smoke kitchen from the 16th century came to light, which is now furnished with historic cooking and baking ware.
