Torfbahn Himmelmoor
Historic field railway in the Himmelmoor near Quickborn: moor rides with nature guides on Germany's first completely preserved peat railway.
Over het museum
Peat was extracted industrially in the Himmelmoor near Quickborn beginning in 1870. To bring the fuel peat to the train station, a narrow-gauge field railway was built; in the moor the wagons were initially pushed by hand, and on the line to the pressed-peat factory they were first pulled by a benzol locomotive and, from 1920, also by peat-fired steam locomotives. From 1925, light diesel locomotives were added, which could drive directly onto the extraction areas. After 1945, extraction experienced its most productive period; from the 1960s, white peat for potting soil replaced fuel peat.
In 1973 a new peat works went into operation on the Himmelmoorchaussee, and the tracks into the town were dismantled. The works' employees built their own locomotives from used machines, such as a four-axle double locomotive and, in 2004, a diesel-electric articulated locomotive. As early as 1978, the plant manager's family took visitors through the moor on weekends on simple passenger wagons.
In 2015, field railway enthusiasts founded the working group Torfbahn Himmelmoor, and since 2016 the association has regularly taken guests through the moor. After peat extraction ended in 2018, it took over the entire rail-bound fleet – by its own account, Germany's first completely preserved field railway. The 600-millimeter railway is now also used for the renaturation of the moor; during the rides, certified nature guides explain moor ecology and peat history. At the depot with the listed Nissen hut, the vehicles are maintained and restored by volunteers.
