Over het museum

In Schlußdorf, now part of Worpswede, peat barges were built in a small shipyard from 1850 onward. By 1954, more than 600 so-called Halbhunt boats had been launched here. These flat, keelless oak boats held around six cubic meters of peat, about 50 baskets, and carried the fuel from the Teufelsmoor via ditches, canals, and the Hamme River all the way to Bremen. A mast with a tarred sail, leeboards, and long punting poles made them maneuverable on the shallow waterways; in 1875, some 18,000 peat boats were counted passing St. Jürgen on the Hamme.

After the death of the last boatbuilder, Hinrich Grotheer, the Heimatverein Schlußdorf (local history society) acquired the dilapidated half-timbered building. With support from the district of Osterholz, the municipality of Worpswede, and sponsors, it was restored and opened as a museum in 1977.

On display are tools for boatbuilding, peat cutting, and clog making, as well as historic photos of the life of the moor farmers. One peat boat has been preserved in its original condition. The site also includes a flap sluice, a farmhouse bread oven, old beehives, and a draw well. Since 2015, a café in the museum building has provided food and drink; every year on the third Sunday in July, the Heimatverein hosts the Backofenfest (bread oven festival) with butter cake from the stone oven.
