Tuchmuseum Lennep
Volunteer-run museum in Remscheid-Lennep on Bergisch cloth making, using the company Johann Wülfing & Sohn as an example – free admission.
Over het museum
The foundation of the cloth museum is a company museum that the cloth factory Johann Wülfing & Sohn set up in the old manor house on its premises in Dahlerau in the mid-1980s and opened in 1987. The family business had produced high-quality fabrics in Lennep and on the Wupper for two centuries; from 1880, its own worsted spinning mill in Lennep supplied part of the yarn. When production ended – it was the region's last textile manufacturer – the company museum also had to close.
The collection then moved to rooms in the Freiherr vom Stein elementary school on Hardtstraße in Lennep, directly across from the Deutsches Röntgen-Museum. The cloth museum opened there in 1997. It is run by the Anna-Hardt-Stiftung, originally a social family foundation from the 19th century that has been devoted since 1989 to researching Bergisch cloth making. Volunteers operate the museum without public subsidies.
In six rooms, the museum shows how sheep's wool becomes yarn and finally cloth, what role the Wupper played as a supplier of energy and water, and how Lennep became the city of cloth makers. Other topics are the trading houses that distributed Bergisch cloth worldwide, the social facilities the entrepreneurs provided for their workforce, and fashion, colors and sample collections from about a century. The cloth museum complements the Wülfing-Museum in Radevormwald-Dahlerau, where the factory's historic machine park is preserved.
