Anniversary show for 2026 that changes several times over the year and takes up new themes related to the vehicle. No end date has been announced.
The Unimog was built at the Daimler-Benz plant in Gaggenau starting in 1951. When it became clear in 2001 that production would move to the truck plant in Wörth, people in the region came up with the idea of dedicating a museum to the history of the Universal-Motor-Gerät (universal motor vehicle). A nonprofit association was founded for this purpose in November 2002; after groundbreaking in March 2005, the museum opened on June 3, 2006.
The building by Gaggenau architect Florian Kohlbecker, with its facade of local woods, received the Hugo Häring Award of the Bund Deutscher Architekten (Association of German Architects) in 2014. An extension, also designed by Kohlbecker, was occupied in early 2023 and doubled the exhibition space; it now holds twice as many vehicles and units, as well as a winch display line.
The collection ranges from the first postwar prototypes developed by Albert Friedrich, through variants for agriculture, disaster relief, winter road maintenance, and expeditions, to MB-trac tractors and current models. On the outdoor course, drivers demonstrate the vehicles' off-road capability on rides over steep ramps. The museum is backed by a friends' association, an operating company, and a foundation, with support from the Unimog-Club Gaggenau; in 2026 it celebrates its 20th anniversary and 80 years of the Unimog.
