Urmensch-Museum
Municipal museum in Steinheim an der Murr centered on the skull of the Steinheim early human and the Ice Age animal world with a steppe elephant.
Over het museum
In 1933, the skull of a young woman who lived about 400,000 years ago came to light in a gravel pit near Steinheim an der Murr. The find, which became known as Homo steinheimensis, is considered the most complete early human skull from Germany; the original is kept by the Staatliches Museum für Naturkunde Stuttgart. Even before that, the gravel and sand pits between Steinheim and Murr had yielded numerous mammal fossils, including in 1910 the skeleton of a steppe elephant.
Following a town council decision, in 1968 the town opened a museum in the Hans-Trautwein-Haus, a former school building on the Kirchplatz, as a branch of the Stuttgart natural history museum. At first it consisted of a single room; an extension followed in 1974, and an enlargement and complete redesign in 1983 according to a concept by Stuttgart scientists.
On about 340 square meters and two floors, the exhibition leads from the history of research through the evolution of humankind to the geology of the region and the warm-period and cold-period animal world. Since 2017, a lifelike full-body reconstruction shows how the Steinheim woman might have looked. A friends' association supports the museum, including with audio guides, a media table and listening and hands-on stations for children.
