Urzeitmuseum Taufkirchen
Fossil museum with an 18 m long Brachiosaurus, Ice Age skeletons, Messel finds and a dino garden in Taufkirchen (Vils) in the Erding district.
Over het museum
The Urzeitmuseum goes back to the private fossil collection of Peter Kapustin and opened in 2008 in Taufkirchen an der Vils. It is run by the nonprofit association "Freunde des Urzeitmuseums Taufkirchen (Vils)"; its construction and operation rely to a large extent on volunteer work, and the museum is financed almost exclusively through admission fees, shop and sponsors.
On just under 2,000 square meters, a chronological tour leads through about 200 million years of earth history – from the last Ice Age through the primeval forests of Bavaria and the Messel oil shale pit to the age of the dinosaurs. About two thirds of the more than 500 exhibits are originals. Finds from the Upper Freshwater Molasse, including ancient elephants and rhinoceroses, come from the museum team's own excavations in the Freising and Erding area, which they have carried out for about two decades.
With the expansion of the ground floor, three themed rooms on marine reptiles and fish were added, including a Mosasaurus and selected pieces from the Kapustin collection from the Altmühltal. Outdoors, a dino garden with life-size models and a paleobotanical nature trail complement the offering. The association is currently collecting donations for a new exhibition on the "Erdinger Urelefanten" (Erding ancient elephants). The museum received the Kulturpreis of the Erding district for its work.
