Over het museum

The mill in the Kessel district of Goch is among the oldest on the Lower Rhine: it first appears in records in 1291, when the Hommersum estate, including the mill, passed to Graefenthal Abbey. For centuries, grain was ground and oil pressed here on an arm of the Niers; after secularization, the complex passed into private hands in the early 19th century.

The mill took on its present form mainly from around 1870 under the Mathysen family, who expanded the works, had a residence, a boiler house, and later a silo wing built, and even maintained a siding connected to the railway line. From 1930, operations ran only on steam and electricity; the oil mill ceased work in 1940, the grain mill in 1972.

In 1994, the puppeteer Heinz Bömler bought the decaying ensemble and restored it extensively; it has been a listed monument since 2000. Since then, the Viller Mühle has been a museum, event venue, and prop store all in one: in the buildings, Bömler has gathered numerous completely furnished old shops and a huge quantity of everyday objects, which are also lent out as props for films. Visitors experience the collection in humorously hosted programs, at cabaret evenings, and on the annual Pentecost days.

A separate family version of the program "Die Ware Wahnsinn" for mixed groups and a children's program with interactive fairy tales, puppet theater, and a balloon launch, which can also be booked as a children's birthday party.

Bereikbaarheid & parkeren

From Goch take the B 504 toward Kranenburg, turn left onto Driesbergstraße, turn right onto Kapellenhofstraße and immediately right again toward Viller. From the A 57 take the Kleve/Goch exit (not Goch/Weeze).
