Over het museum

The Vereinigte Spezialmöbelfabriken (VS) have been making furniture in Tauberbischofsheim since the late 19th century and are now among the major manufacturers of school furnishings. For the company's 100th anniversary, it set up a school museum at its headquarters in 1998. It was conceived under the longtime managing director Prof. Dr. Thomas Müller; an extensive catalog was published in 2010.

The permanent exhibition "Das Klassenzimmer vom Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts bis heute" is not limited to the company's own products. It shows school furniture from over a hundred years from Germany and abroad and combines it with architectural models, historical photographs, teaching aids, and manifestos of progressive education. This makes it possible to follow how school buildings and furnishings changed with pedagogical ideas.

The tour leads from the strictly ordered classrooms of the 19th century through the reform movement around 1900, open-air schools, and buildings of the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) to reconstruction after 1945. Further stops include the school-building boom of the 1960s and 1970s with comprehensive schools and stackable furniture, as well as today's diverse learning landscapes. The museum can only be visited as part of registered tours.
