Over het museum
The museum's roots go back to 1908, when Mayor Paul Hagemeister called on Suhl's arms makers to contribute pieces to a municipal collection; in November of that same year, a Städtisches Museum (municipal museum) opened on Kirchgasse. After wartime losses and the postwar years, preparations began in 1968 to convert it into a specialized museum, and it reopened as the Waffenmuseum (Arms Museum) just in time for the 1971 European Shooting Championships.
The museum is housed in the Malzhaus, a three-winged complex built in 1668 on the banks of the Lauter, shortly after the Thirty Years' War. With its vaulted cellars, solid stone base and half-timbered upper floors, the building long served the brewing trade and was later used as housing. In the 1970s, it drew up to 100,000 visitors a year. Following renovations in 1985/86 and from 2006 to 2008, the current permanent exhibition opened in June 2008.
Across some 1,000 square meters on three floors, the museum displays more than 460 weapons along with tools, documents and decorative arts. The tour leads from iron ore mining, the foundation of the local trade, through the workshops of gunsmiths, stock makers and engravers to hunting, sporting and military weapons. Its treasures include ornate showpiece arms made for European royal courts, works by Suhl medalists and porcelain from Suhl's manufactories. The museum is run by the city of Suhl and has held the museum quality seal of the Museumsverband Thüringen since 2016.
