Walchensee-Museum
Local history and art museum in the former Hotel zur Post in Urfeld on Lake Walchensee with over 300 prints by Lovis Corinth (currently closed).
Over het museum
The Walchensee-Museum goes back to the Munich civil engineer Friedhelm Oriwol, who has owned an apartment in Urfeld since the 1970s and collected postcards, prints, books, documents, and paintings of the area around Lake Walchensee, Lake Kochelsee, and Jachenau over decades. Later, more than 300 prints by Lovis Corinth were added; Corinth owned a house in Urfeld from 1919 and created his well-known Walchensee paintings there.
The museum is housed in the former Hotel zur Post. Since the 12th century, a hunting lodge stood on the site, which later belonged to Benediktbeuern Abbey and served as lodging for travelers and as a boat station; around 1870 a hotel was built there, which received a post office from 1882. Oriwol acquired the building in 2006, had it extensively renovated, and opened the museum on July 21, 2008, Corinth's 150th birthday. In 2010, Inge and Friedhelm Oriwol transferred the museum to the Friedhelm-Oriwol-Stiftung (foundation) they had established.
Besides the Corinth prints, the museum shows local history collections on places, houses, and families around the lake, on the Walchensee power plant, and on the Kesselberg race. In 2017, the foundation acquired works by the long-forgotten painter Charlotte von Maltzahn, whose expressionist paintings have been on permanent view since then; further rooms are devoted to women artists such as Charlotte Berend-Corinth, Hermine Kellermann, and Maria Marc. The museum is currently closed due to staffing reasons.
