Over het museum

The idea for the Walpurgishalle came from the painter Hermann Hendrich, who originally wanted to build a hall for Walpurgis celebrations on the Brocken. After an architectural competition, the choice fell on the Hexentanzplatz high above the Bode Valley and on the design by Berlin architect Bernhard Sehring, who proposed a building in the style of an ancient Germanic log house. The hall was inaugurated in 1901.

The gable is crowned by a head of the god Wotan, flanked by ravens and wolves. Inside, the hall displays five large-format paintings by Hendrich depicting scenes from Walpurgis Night in Goethe's Faust: the dance of the will-o'-the-wisps, Mammon's cave, the witches' dance, the whirlwind bride and the apparition of Gretchen. More paintings by the artist were added later, along with an extension in 1928. In the entrance area lies a stone found during construction at the nearby Sachsenwall.

The concept proved influential: the Sagenhalle in Schreiberhau in Silesia and the Nibelungenhalle in Königswinter followed its example. Today, Bodetal Tourismus GmbH operates the hall as a small seasonal museum; a 3D audio guide for adults and children explains the paintings. Large Walpurgis celebrations take place around the Hexentanzplatz every year.
