Museum der Stadt Weinheim
Museum of town and regional history in Weinheim's Baroque Deutschordenshaus (Teutonic Order house) – from an Ice Age mammoth skull to the 20th century.
Over het museum
The roots of the museum go back to 1906, when the Weinheimer Altertumsverein (antiquities association) formed around Karl Zinkgräf and began collecting evidence of local history. The collection moved several times: from 1911 into the then trade school, in 1938 into the Villa Dessauer. That same year the town of Weinheim took over the holdings and the association dissolved.
Since 1939 the collection has been housed in the former house of the Teutonic Order on Amtsgasse. The Order had the Baroque building erected in 1710; after its dissolution in 1809, the building served as a district office and later as a lower tax office, before the town acquired it in 1934. In 1948 the local history museum (Heimatmuseum) opened here, which was renamed Museum der Stadt Weinheim in 1986.
After a comprehensive renovation from 1996 to 1998, the house shows its permanent exhibition on four floors and about 1,000 square meters. The span extends from prehistory and early history, with a mammoth skull and a Bronze Age hoard, through medieval church frescoes to evidence from the 19th and 20th centuries. A friends' association (Förderkreis) founded in 1989 supports the museum, including with publications and a digital town history table.
