Survey of five decades of work by the Nuremberg painter and graphic artist Eitel Klein, including numerous sheets from his time as a prisoner of war, 1943–1950.
At the heart of the Weißes Schloss (White Palace) is a manor house that the Nuremberg patrician family Geuder had built next to the Heroldsberg church in the late 15th century. After the building was badly damaged in the wars of the 16th century, it was rebuilt in its present form as a three-story masonry structure; the characteristic stair tower was added in the 18th century.
The Geuder family remained the owners for centuries, until a descendant sold the estate to the municipality in 1928. For almost eight decades after that, the palace served as the town hall and the mayor's residence, and for a time the first floor also housed a kindergarten.
After the administration moved out, the Markt Heroldsberg had the building thoroughly renovated and made accessible from 2014 to 2016 at a cost of around €2.4 million. In 2017 it opened as a museum run by volunteers of the Kulturfreunde Heroldsberg association; a museum foundation and a friends' association support its work.
The first floor tells the story of the town – from old inns to industrial firms such as the paper mills that gave rise to the Tempo tissue and the writing-instrument maker Schwan-STABILO. The second floor is used for changing exhibitions, often featuring works by the Franconian painter Fritz Griebel, while the third floor is devoted to the Geuder family. An adjacent building houses a memorial to the victims of the world wars.
