Widukindmuseum Enger
Museum next to the Stiftskirche (collegiate church) in Enger about the Saxon leader Widukind, his presumed grave and how his image has changed up to the present day.
Over het museum
The museum dates back to the late 1930s, when an exhibition on the Saxon leader Widukind, who according to tradition is buried in Enger, was set up in an old hall house right next to the Stiftskirche. During the Nazi era, Widukind was appropriated as a symbolic figure of the ideology. Although the Nazi symbols were removed after 1945, the basic concept remained in place until the end of the 1970s.
Excavations in the Stiftskirche in the 1970s uncovered graves in the choir; neither anthropological studies nor later DNA analyses could determine whether one of them belongs to Widukind. After some five years of planning and renovation, the museum reopened on August 20, 2006, with a completely new exhibition that does not celebrate a hero but instead asks how the image of Widukind has changed over the centuries.
The tour leads from the Saxon Wars (772–785) and Widukind's baptism, through the founding of the collegiate foundation by Queen Mathilde and the remains of the Enger collegiate treasure, to aristocratic genealogies, history painting and monuments of the 19th and 20th centuries, and on to his appropriation by National Socialism. A free audio guide accompanies the visit. Concerts, lectures and readings take place in the attic. The museum is run by the town of Enger; a friends' association founded in 2003 supports its work.
