Museum Wilhelm Morgner
Municipal art museum in Soest with works by the Expressionist Wilhelm Morgner, the city's art holdings, and the Raum Schroth for conceptual art.
Over het museum
The building on Thomästraße was constructed in 1962 to designs by the Wiesbaden architect Rainer Schell as a multipurpose building and is considered a typical example of the architecture of those years; it has been a listed building since 1999. For a long time it operated as the Kunstmuseum Wilhelm-Morgner-Haus.
After a comprehensive renovation with new climate control and building systems and accessible access, the building reopened in May 2016 as the Museum Wilhelm Morgner. At the same time, the Stiftung Konzeptuelle Kunst moved into the specially designed Raum Schroth with the Schroth collection.
At the center is the work of the Expressionist Wilhelm Morgner, born in Soest in 1891, of whom the museum owns paintings, prints, and drawings. The museum also shows works from the city's extensive art holdings – from Westphalian Expressionism and regional landscape painting to art after 1945. A glass installation by Jochem Poensgen in the entrance area can be seen as a long-term loan.
