Wollspinnerei Blunck
Heritage-protected wool spinning mill from 1852 in Bad Segeberg with working machinery, being developed into a museum by a friends' association.
Over het museum
Joachim Christian Blunck founded the wool spinning mill in Segeberg in 1852. Only coarse, long-fiber raw wool from shepherds in Schleswig-Holstein and Mecklenburg was processed. The first machines were driven by a horse gin, later by steam engines, diesel engines, and finally electric motors. Until the 1930s, the business grew by adding further buildings; at times it included a weaving mill for blankets and a knitting workshop, whose goods were sold in the shop on Kurhausstraße.
After World War II, cheap imports and changing fashion put pressure on small spinning mills. Until the early 2000s, Blunck still produced knitting, weaving, and felting yarns, after which production was gradually discontinued; in 2021 the company was deleted from the commercial register after 169 years.
The buildings and machinery have been under heritage protection since 2003. The friends' association, founded in 2008, purchased the ensemble in 2019 in order to make it accessible as a technical museum. The machinery includes carding sets from 1904 and a 24-meter-long self-acting mule from 1907 with 320 spindles. Since the end of 2025, the buildings have been undergoing renovation, after which the machines are to be restored.
