Württemberg-Haus Beutelsbach
Two museums in Beutelsbach's old town hall: the beginnings of the House of Württemberg and the 1514 "Poor Conrad" uprising – with free admission.
Over het museum
The Württemberg-Haus in Weinstadt-Beutelsbach is the village's former town hall, built in 1534, and is one of the oldest village town halls in Württemberg. For centuries, the half-timbered building was the center of the market town: market and court days were held on the ground floor, later the bull stable was housed there, and on the upper floor the municipal council met until moving into the new town hall of 1965.
In 2013/14, the city of Weinstadt had the building renovated in keeping with heritage requirements and converted for museum use. In the process, significant remains of Renaissance wall paintings came to light on the upper floor. For its careful adaptation to today's requirements, the project received first prize in the national competition "HolzbauPlus." In 2015 the building opened as a museum.
The building houses two thematic museums that combine state and local history. The Museum Wiege Württembergs (Cradle of Württemberg) on the upper floor uses excavation finds from the Kappelberg, casts, and media stations to tell how the lords of Beutelsbach moved to the Wirtemberg around 1080 and became the ancestral house of the Württembergers, and how Beutelsbach, as the seat of a collegiate foundation, long remained a spiritual center.
The Museum Bauernkrieg (Peasants' War) on the ground floor is devoted to the "Poor Conrad" uprising of 1514, which began and ended in Beutelsbach and is regarded as the most important precursor of the Peasants' War of 1525. The offering is complemented by special exhibitions on local and cultural history, lectures, museum hours, and school workshops in the former bull stable.
