Ziegeleipark Mildenberg
Industrial monument and adventure park on the Havel: ring kilns, machine halls, and narrow-gauge railways tell the story of Europe's largest brickmaking district.
Over het museum
In 1887, during construction of a railway bridge near Zehdenick, workers came across vast clay deposits. Within a few years, one of the largest brickmaking districts in Europe emerged along the Havel; around 1910, dozens of Hoffmann ring kilns here were firing hundreds of millions of bricks a year. Almost the entire output went by barge to Berlin, which is why the city is jokingly described as having been "built from the barge."
In the GDR the works continued as state-owned enterprises until production ended in the early 1990s after reunification. The surviving facilities in Mildenberg were turned into a museum park that has welcomed more than one million visitors since the late 1990s. The state of Brandenburg and the district of Oberhavel financed the restoration of numerous buildings; the park is operated by the district's economic and tourism development agency.
On around 40 hectares, original ring kilns, machine halls, workshops, and the Ziegelei Stackebrandt from 1927 show every stage of brickmaking, from the manual labor of the late 19th century to machine production. Exhibitions are devoted to Friedrich Hoffmann, the inventor of the ring kiln, to work in the state-owned enterprise (VEB), and to transport on the Havel; in the historic harbor lie a Finow-Maßkahn (barge) and a replica of a Kaffenkahn.
Narrow-gauge and clay-tipper railways run across the grounds and into the Naturpark Uckermärkische Seen. The park is an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Heritage (ERIH).
