Over het museum
The Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris occupies the City of Paris wing of the Palais de Tokyo, a building constructed in 1937 for the International Exhibition of Art and Technology in Modern Life. The design by architects Jean-Claude Dondel, André Aubert, Paul Viard and Marcel Dastugue joins two large wings with a portico, opening onto the Seine. Originally, both the State and the City of Paris wanted to set up a museum of modern art there.
The State opened the Musée national d'art moderne here in 1947, before moving it to the Centre Pompidou in 1977. The City of Paris created its own museum in 1961. The bequest of Dr. Maurice Girardin in 1953, with more than 500 works, was decisive and gave the collection its strengths: a core of Fauvist paintings, Cubist works, and artists such as Rouault, Soutine and Modigliani. In 1954, Électricité de France donated the large decoration La Fée Électricité by Raoul Dufy, displayed from 1964.
The collections have been enriched by gifts, notably the Amos and Henry-Thomas donations, the Michael Werner donation (2012) and the Chirico bequest (2011). They now hold more than 15,000 works from the 20th and 21st centuries. Access to the permanent collections has been free since 2001. The museum was renovated in 2018 and 2019 to improve reception and accessibility, and reopened in October 2019.
